Happy Father's Day!

Families choose to celebrate Father's Day in many different ways.  Some dads may go out to lunch, while others may prefer a barbeque at home.  One dad's ideal Father's Day may be a day on the golf course with his buddies, however another might like to spend the day at his child's Little League game.

Just as the individual celebrations have evolved, so has the holiday itself.  Father's Day was created by a young woman named Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, the oldest of six children being raised by a widower whose wife had died in childbirth.  Sonora was listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 and felt it only fair that fathers should also be honored.  The next year was the first Father's Day celebration with red roses being worn to honor living fathers and white roses to honor deceased fathers.  The holiday continued to grow, and in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge recommended that the third Sunday in June be reserved for Father's Day. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a similar proclamation, but Father's Day finally became official with President Richard Nixon's signing in 1972, and now is celebrated throughout the world.

The Rockville dental staff of Dr.Siegel's office would like to wish all of our patients who are fathers a wonderful Father's Day.  We hope you will enjoy this time with your family as much as we will enjoy our time with ours.
