Mind the Gap: Invisalign® Treatment for Gapped Teeth By Victor Siegel on August 13, 2014

Close up of a woman’s face, her beautiful, gap-free smile dominating the imageSince its inception, Invisalign® has changed the way people think about orthodontic treatment. No longer are metal brackets, wires, and rubber bands mandatory for the effective treatment of a variety of orthodontic issues. Now, thanks to the subtle, discreet treatment made possible by the revolutionary Invisalign® system, teenagers and adults can undergo the orthodontic treatment they need without having to worry about wearing conspicuous metal braces.

One of the chief benefits of the Invisalign® system is that it produces results similar to those achieved with metal braces in a wide range of cases, including those involving gaps between teeth. At the cosmetic dentistry practice of Victor R. Siegel, DDS in Rockville, Invisalign® for gapped teeth has helped numerous patients achieve beautifully straight, uniform smiles, free from spacing issues.

How does Invisalign® work?

Part of the beauty of the Invisalign® system is its simplicity. Once Dr. Siegel determines that a patient is a suitable candidate for Invisalign®, he uses advanced computer technology to determine the optimal position of the teeth compared to the current position of the teeth, essentially creating a map for the movement of misaligned teeth. This map is used to customize a complete set of transparent plastic aligners, each of which is shaped slightly differently. Every two weeks or so, the current aligner that the patient is wearing is swapped out for the next aligner in the series. Each new aligner gently but definitively guides the teeth toward their optimal position in the mouth.

How does Invisalign® close gaps between teeth?

Gaps between teeth are often the result of misalignment of the teeth. The Invisalign® system corrects misalignment by moving the teeth permanently into their appropriate positions in the mouth. Gradually, teeth that are separated by gaps will be guided closer together, strengthening the bite, improving appearance, and dramatically reducing the risk that they will drift further out of alignment into the gaps. The result of Invisalign® treatment is a healthier, more attractive smile free from gaps and other cosmetic and oral health problems.

Candidates for Invisalign®

Nearly anyone with minor to moderate orthodontic issues, including gaps that separate teeth, can benefit from Invisalign® treatment. In general, Invisalign® produces results similar to those of traditional metal braces in approximately the same amount of time. Although Invisalign® aligners must be worn for about 22 hours a day to ensure optimal results, they may be removed for brushing, flossing, and eating.

Invisalign® is highly effective in closing gaps between teeth that are caused by misalignment; however, gaps that are present due to teeth that are misshapen or abnormally narrow may require an alternative treatment such as porcelain veneers.

Invisalign® treatment should only be administered by an experienced, highly trained dental professional who is a certified Invisalign® provider, such as Dr. Siegel.
