Sedated Patient

Sedation Dentistry

Does the thought of going to the dentist give you crippling anxiety? Would you rather suffer a toothache than be in a dentist's chair?

Sedation dentistry can get you the dental care you need in a relaxed and comfortable environment.

Let Dr. Siegel and his Rockville, MD, dentistry team ease your anxiety while improving your oral health.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry allows patients to relax during dental procedures through the use of medication prescribed by their dentist. Whether it be a routine cleaning or a more invasive dental procedure at our Rockville dental office, sedation dentistry can help patients restore their oral health, sometimes in as little as one visit.

Am I a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is an option for patients who experience excessive fear concerning their dental care. Whether you need general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, dental implant restoration, or any other dental treatment, sedation dentistry will make your experience comfortable and anxiety-free.

There are risks with any sedation. Certain underlying health issues can increase those risks, which is why we meet with you before any sedation is recommended to assess your overall health. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. Siegel is qualified to administer sedation dentistry treatments safely and effectively.

Overcome Dental Fear With Sedation

Oral conscious sedation creates a condition called anxiolysis, which relaxes patients who suffer from dental fear and anxiety. The patient simply takes the medication before their dental appointment. Dr. Victor Siegel helps patients overcome dental fear with sedation to provide them with much-needed dental care.

Consider Sedation if You Have:

Dental Anxiety

If you've had a poor dental experience in the past or you are simply afraid of any form of dentistry, you should not be embarrassed. Sedation can help you overcome your fear and get you the care you need to handle any dental problems you're experiencing.

Trouble Sitting Still

With anxiety comes nervous movement. This is particularly common in young patients, patients with ADHD, and patients with other special needs. Sedation dentistry will relax you enough that you will feel more like sleeping than wriggling.

A Sensitive Gag Reflex

Some patients have an overly sensitive gag reflex, which can make it next to impossible to perform even simple dental tasks. Sedation will dull your gag reflex, allowing the dentist to complete your oral care.

If you suffer from any form of arthritis, sitting for long periods can be not only uncomfortable but also painful. Sedation helps to ease that pain and discomfort so you can sit through your dental procedure pain- and stress-free.

What Is Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation ensures you are still able to respond to the doctor but that you feel nothing during the procedure. You should feel relaxed but still able to answer when the dentist is asking any questions. We do not work with an anesthesiologist, so all our methods of sedation are given orally.

What You Can Expect

Be sure to have someone available to drive you to and from our dental office.
Be sure to have someone available to drive you to and from our dental office.

During your initial consultation at our Rockville office, we will address any sedation dentistry questions or concerns you may have. After a thorough review of your medical and dental history, Dr. Siegel will determine the best type of sedation for you and schedule an appointment for the dental treatment you need.

Before You Reach Our Office

On the day of the appointment, you will take the pill previously prescribed to you by the dentist and have a companion to drive you to our office and be available to take you home after if you require oral sedation.

During Your Appointment

By the time you reach our office, you will feel relaxed and comfortable if you take oral sedation. Most patients feel no discomfort during or after the appointment and have little or no memory of their visit. Many of our patients repair years of neglected dental work in one sedation dentistry appointment.

If you receive inhaled sedation, the effects are much shorter-lasting, and you will be able to drive yourself to and from your appointment.

Don't Let Fear of Dental Work Keep You From Great Oral Health

Dr. Siegel understands some people have an overwhelming fear of undergoing dentistry treatments. Many patients tell us they've had bad experiences at the dentist, and now, the sounds and smells of a dental office cause them major anxiety and fear. At our Rockville, MD, office, we pride ourselves on providing state-of-the-art dental care in a relaxed, friendly, and stress-free setting.

Types of Sedation

Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation Sedation

Inhaled sedation is a form of minimal sedation. It is where a combination of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oxygen is inhaled through a mask that is placed over your nose and mouth. Your dentist will control how much nitrous oxide you receive to ensure that you always feel comfortable and relaxed throughout your dental procedure.

Oral Sedation

Oral Sedation

Depending on the dose, oral sedation can be minimal or moderate. This is the preferred form of sedation at our Rockville, MD, office. Rather than using laughing gas, your dentist will prescribe a pill for you to take about an hour before your procedure. You will feel drowsy but be awake. Some patients fall asleep during the procedure but can typically be awoken with a gentle nudge.

Local Anesthetic

Even with the use of sedation, a local anesthetic will still be applied by your dentist directly to the area they are working on to virtually eliminate any pain or discomfort.

Get Your Smile Back

With Sedation Dentistry

Fearing the dentist is not something anyone should be ashamed of, but lack of dental care can lead to severe oral and physical health issues. Being unable to sit through routine dental checkups can lead to cavities, tooth decay, gingivitis, and more, depending on the length of time between visits. Sedation dentistry can give you the confidence to take control of your oral health and regain your smile.
