woman with symmetrical smile

Gum Contouring

Is your gummy smile making you feel self-conscious? Do your teeth look disproportionately small compared to your gums?

Gum contouring is a minimally invasive way to enhance a smile that has an uneven or low gum line.

Dentists Victor R. Siegel and Aviva Kramer in Rockville, MD, can reshape your gums to make your smile look proportionate and attractive.

What Is Gum Contouring? A Quick and Simple Smile Enhancement

/

Gum contouring is a subtle but effective cosmetic dentistry procedure that enhances the appearance of your smile by correcting an uneven gum line. We use a diode laser to remove small amounts of soft tissue and balance your gum line, revealing a more symmetrical and attractive smile in just one visit.

A Balanced Smile Is Just One Appointment Away

Am I a Good Candidate For Gum Contouring?

Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, one of our dentists will conduct a detailed examination of your teeth and gums at our Rockville, MD, office. Below are some factors that could affect your candidacy.

Oral Health

Patients should be in good oral health to receive this dental procedure. Any periodontal issues or tooth decay will need to be treated before undergoing gum contouring.

A Desire to Upgrade Your Smile

Patients who are unhappy with their gummy smile or asymmetrical gum line are typically good candidates for this cosmetic treatment. Gum contouring will alter the gum tissue to reveal a more attractive smile.

New Restorations

In some cases, the gum tissue will need to be removed to make room for new restorations like a dental crown. Gum contouring will allow for the placement of the new restoration and contribute to a pleasing overall look.

Realistic Expectations

You should thoroughly explain your cosmetic goals and expectations to your dentist. Gum contouring can create a bigger, more symmetrical smile, but it cannot whiten or straighten your teeth. Other cosmetic treatments may need to be performed in addition to gum contouring to achieve your overall desired look.

What To Expect During the Gum Contouring Procedure

The first step in revealing your beautiful smile is to call our Rockville, MD, practice

The Risk of Side Effects Is Very Low

/

This procedure is virtually painless, and since the laser cauterizes the tissue as it removes it, the risk of infection is extremely low.

Aftercare

The recovery process for gum contouring is relatively short and simple. Minor swelling and soreness are to be expected, but should subside within a week.

Pain Medication

Over-the-counter medication can be taken to manage any pain and swelling you may be experiencing. You should also avoid strenuous activity for the first couple of days following your dental procedure.

Dietary Changes

We recommend you consume mainly soft foods and avoid anything hard or spicy for the first few days following your procedure. These foods can irritate your gums.

Oral Hygiene

It is important to maintain good oral hygiene habits during recovery. Brushing twice daily and flossing once daily should be continued. However, try to be as gentle as possible to avoid irritating your gums.

Combining Gum Contouring With Other Cosmetic Procedures

A gummy smile could just be the start of your cosmetic concerns. Talk to us about other aesthetic issues you may be self-conscious about so we can put together a customized treatment plan that provides the results you want. Gum contouring can be combined with several other cosmetic procedures, such as:

Teeth Whitening

Our Rockville, MD, practice offers professional at-home whitening kits, Zoom!® teeth whitening in-office treatment, or a combination of both to deliver dramatic results. Professional teeth whitening is safe, effective, and long-lasting when compared to over-the-counter alternatives. Combine this treatment with gum contouring to have a bigger, brighter smile.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are thin, durable shells that cover your natural tooth. They are great at covering chipped, damaged, stained, and misaligned teeth, giving you a gorgeous, symmetrical smile. If removing gum tissue is not enough to make you feel confident with your smile, porcelain veneers could be the right treatment to completely realize your goals.

Invisalign

Invisalign® clear aligners are a discreet way to fix minor misalignment issues. They are removable, making it easy to keep the aligners and your teeth and gums clean throughout treatment. Invisalign is a great way to get your teeth into proper alignment before undergoing another dental procedure like gum contouring.

Smile Makeover

If you have multiple aesthetic concerns, our dentists can create a smile makeover treatment plan for you. This plan will combine two or more dentistry treatments to improve the overall aesthetic of your smile. Teeth whitening, gum contouring, veneers, and same-day crowns could all be a part of your smile makeover.
