Frame Your Smile with an Even, Balanced Gum Line

Gum contouring, or gum reshaping, can enhance a smile overshadowed by an uneven or low gum line. A pleasing smile is not only created by bright, even teeth. Ideally, your gums should appear symmetrical and smooth, creating a balanced frame for your teeth. If you are self-conscious about your gums, Dr. Victor R. Siegel can perform a laser gum contouring procedure at our office in Rockville, MD. This cosmetic treatment can significantly boost your confidence in your appearance in just one appointment.

A beautiful smile is dependent on a pleasing gum-to-tooth ratio. Gum reshaping can provide a more balanced appearance.

The Advantages Of Crown Lengthening

Cosmetic gum reshaping is typically recommended for patients with a “gummy smile.” In these cases, excess gum tissue makes teeth appear smaller than they actually are. Sometimes, an uneven gum line can make it seem like your teeth are misaligned even if they are perfectly straight. Gum contouring, or crown lengthening, can give your gum line a more balanced and attractive appearance.

Preparing for Treatment

Before undergoing gum reshaping, Dr. Siegel will conduct a detailed examination of your teeth and gums. As with all cosmetic procedures, it is important to treat any underlying issues before addressing aesthetic concerns. Depending upon your needs, Dr. Siegel may recommend periodontal treatment or other services before a crown lengthening procedure.

Laser Gum Contouring

This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, though we offer various forms of sedation dentistry at our office. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Siegel can use a diode laser to remove excess gum tissue and sculpt a more uniform, balanced gum line. This advanced laser system minimizes pain and bleeding by sealing your gums as it removes tissue. The entire procedure is generally completed in a single visit. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the sculpting process.

Treatment Aftercare

After your treatment, your gums may be swollen or sore for a few days. This discomfort should be minimal, and usually lasts less than a week. At this time, most patients are able to return to their daily activities without interference.

We often recommend combining crown lengthening with other procedures, such as teeth whitening or porcelain veneers, for more dramatic results.

We recommend you consume mainly soft foods and avoid anything hard or spicy for the first few days after the procedure. While you should brush and floss your teeth, it is important to be as gentle as possible. Typically, any pain or sensitivity can be managed with an over-the-counter pain medication.

Transform Your Smile

Gum contouring is a subtle but effective way to enhance the appearance of your smile. This procedure works well as a stand-alone treatment. However, we often recommend combining crown lengthening with other procedures, such as teeth whitening or porcelain veneers, for more dramatic results. Dr. Siegel can even design a comprehensive smile makeover treatment plan to address multiple aesthetic concerns.
