Root Canal Treatment Can Save Your Tooth and Restore Your Oral Health

A root canal can eliminate discomfort and save an infected tooth. This procedure can also prevent further damage and infection in the nearby area. Dr. Victor R. Siegel and his team offer precise, minimal-discomfort root canal treatment at their Rockville, MD, practice. During this procedure, he will remove infected tissue and bacteria that can cause a severe toothache. He will also restore your tooth with a custom-made dental crown. Because our office uses state-of-the-art CEREC® technology, we can often complete root canal therapy and restore your tooth in a single appointment.

Do You Need a Root Canal?

Our practice typically performs root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, to restore infected teeth. Infection can develop when a cavity grows, and bacteria reach the soft pulp inside your tooth. The microbes can then spread down along your nerves and into your root canals. As infection grows, you can experience a number of symptoms. Signs of dental infection include:

  • A toothache, which will typically worsen with pressure or when exposed to cold temperatures
  • Radiating pain in your lower face and up into your ear
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Small sores, or abscesses on gums near the tips of your tooth roots
  • Darkening of a single tooth
  • Swelling in your jaw

The Root Canal Procedure

Before your root canal, Dr. Siegel will numb your tooth and gums. With local anesthesia, most patients find that the procedure involves very little stress and discomfort. However, if you suffer from dental anxiety, we can also provide oral conscious sedation.

During the first part of the treatment, Dr. Siegel will clean out your tooth to eliminate infection and bacteria. As he works, he will also reshape the inside of your tooth and your root canals. Once decay has been removed, he will fill the root canals with a soft, rubber-like substance called gutta-percha. This material will seal the canals so that bacteria cannot get back inside. Finally, Dr. Siegel will restore your tooth with a dental crown.

Our office proudly uses CEREC® technology, and we can often create your crown in-house, typically in an hour or less. You will not have to worry about an inconvenient temporary restoration or multiple trips to our office. Best of all, because CEREC® uses advanced materials, your crown will be durable and almost indistinguishable from your natural tooth.

Root canal therapy is typically the only way to save an infected tooth and prevent the need for extraction, and can eliminate your toothache.

The Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic treatment has both short and long-term benefits. This conservative procedure is typically the only way to save an infected tooth and prevent the need for extraction, and can eliminate your toothache. You may experience some slight sensitivity following your procedure. However, in most cases, you will notice an almost immediate improvement in the level of your discomfort.  The treatment can also restore your oral function, allowing you to bite, chew, and speak normally. Finally, root canal therapy can prevent serious consequences for you overall oral and physical health. Without this procedure, bacteria could spread, infecting your nearby teeth. In rare but serious cases, the bacteria could even move to your jawbone or brain.
